7-CN-7-C-Ino is a potent and highly specific activator of the cAMP-independent trypanosomal protein kinase A (in Trypanosoma brucei EC50 6.5 ± 4.6 nM on the purified holoenzyme, KD 8 ± 2 nM to the regulatory subunit PKAR) that has low toxicity in vivo (Bachmaier et al., Nat. Commun., 10(1):1421 (2019)). It was also described as a naturally occuring metabolite, called Jaspamycin, isolated from the marine sponge Jaspis splendens (Wang et al., J. Nat. Prod., 79, 353 - 361 (2016)).
